Global Initiative for M2M Standardization

Wed, 18/01/2012 - 17:05

Seven Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) are set to create a cooperative M2M standards activity.

In doing this, they intend to pull together multiple industries to create specifications that will improve the return on investment on standards work and create a worldwide potential for M2M applications. This approach has been inspired by the 3GPP model and during the establishment of the M2M initiative, the SDOs have looked to 3GPP and its market-focus and global participation as a bench mark.

3GPP systems are also expected to be a vital enabler for M2M from the outset.

A press release, issued simultaneously by the SDOs, announced that “the global initiative will be established early in 2012 and will then initiate the technical work to meet the challenges of rapidly evolving industries.”

The global initiative has currently gathered representatives from: the Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB) and the Telecommunication Technology Committee (TTC) of Japan; the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) and the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) of the USA; the China Communications Standards Association (CCSA); the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI); and the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) of Korea.

3GPP Old Mobile phone competition

Fri, 16/12/2011 - 15:25

There were some emotional moments – after hours - on the Tuesday evening of the 3GPP SA meeting, in Berlin. Nothing to do with the progress of Carrier Aggregation or Machine to machine priorities, but around a bunch of odd looking phones, brought here for the 3GPP ‘OLD MOBILE PHONE COMPETITION'.

The rules were few, but strict. Each contender had to be present & demonstrate their phone and had to attempt a voice call over the local network.

From the weighty and barely transportable Motorola 1000 through the ancient Ericsson GH197 and original Nokia 2110, to the almost indestructible Siemens S10 brick and the classic house building material that was the Nokia Communicator…the surprising fact is that given a good power supply and an active SIM card, these phones still work and do what they were designed to do – communicate.

The prizes (bottles of beer) were equally shared amongst the presenters, but the judges did give a special prize – a phone shaped Christmas tree decoration - for the Räpylä Cityman -91, a phone shaped flask (!), presented by Mikko Kanerva.

Things are changing so quickly in telecoms and the form factors are a great example of the progress being made. From that perspective these museum pieces are outdated, but to the engineers in the room they are classics and a tribute to the stability and quality of the work done in ETSI TC SMG at the outset and in 3GPP since 1998 .

3GPP short films

Fri, 21/10/2011 - 18:18

Three of the 3GPP TSG Chairmen were caught on camera at the recent LTE Asia conference in Singapore, discussing Legacy access and LTE interworking, the role of the Evolved Packet Core, the impact of machine type communications and several other topics:

FILM 1 - GERAN and LTE

In his video, Andrew Howell describes how GERAN and LTE Inter-working is going, with the term GELTE being used to describe the work. Also, as GSM/EDGE systems will be called on to cope with a great deal of the effort to support increasing machine type communications - requirements for that key topic are mentioned in this interview...go to video

FILM 2 - LTE connectivity

Atle Monrad covers some general questions about the work of CT, moving on to explain how the 3GPP Core Network will deal with LTE hotspot type coverage early on, allowing hand-over to and from LTE areas. Atle, also mentions the important area of emergency call handling in the IMS domain and EPWS progress....go to video

FILM 3 - The data explosion

Balazs Bertenyi's video contains a good description of how the Releases measure the progress of the 3GPP system. The second part of the film covers some of the features and priorities for work in Release 11 and beyond....go to video

The LTE Asia event was something of a success and the 3GPP session - on standards drew an good crowd - with presentations (see below) on all of the major areas of work - with an emphasis on LTE and the focus of Release 11 work.

The slides from LTE Asia are also freely available; About LTE Asia

LTE Asia is a part of the LTE World Series, which consists of the LTE World summit, LTE MENA, LTE Asia, LTE Latin America and LTE North America. The events are produced and coordinated by Informa Telecoms & Communications.

3GPP is a strategic partner in that series of Conferences and from time-to-time runs standards streams at the event. We are currently considering running 3GPP TSG presentations at the LTE Latin America event next spring (17/18 April, in Rio).
